Jacksonville, OR

No, not like the city in Florida. The city in Florida wishes it could be as quaint and enticing as this place, an old mining town founded in the 1850s during the Gold Rush.

And it just so happens that the weekend we're in town, there's a music festival happening, and the summer series kickoff is tonight!

The Britt Music & Arts Festival has been around since the 1960s in its inaugural venue inside Britt Gardens, which sits on what was once Southern Oregon's largest brewery. The festival has since attracted incredibly well-known music acts - the Ringo Starr and the Diana Ross are slated to perform just the week following our visit!

Some impressions of the free kickoff concert:

Act I: Sincere singer-songwriter with some lowkey cringe jokes that of course the old timers loved, but very sincere nonetheless! -Maddie & Will

Act II: Kind of country-Celtic rock hybrid. Highlight was a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" with a cello as Robert Plant's voice. -Will

I missed most of it going to the bathroom, but I liked the banjo dad jokes. -Maddie

Act III: What's her name - Lady Antebellum? -Maddie

The singalong part sounds like what would happen if Dolly Parton and Joan Baez collaborated for a Unitarian Universalist fundraiser in their twilight years. Not in a bad way! In this case, we were all here to celebrate the "graduation" of a class of 6th graders, which added yet another layer to the small-town vibe, set by the crowd of heavily-buzzed retirees. -Will
